Chumbe Island Lodge

Chumbe is a small forested island just a few kilometres to the south of Zanzibar Stone town. It is at the center of a small marine conservation area and is the site of a small and exclusive lodge.

NUMBER OF ROOMS & DESCRIPTION

There are just seven of these fabulously wierd constructions, for a maximum of around 14 guests, so the island never feels busy, even when full. The bandas are reasonably well spaced, although could have been farther apart for our liking, but do nonetheless give a real feeling of being out in the wilds. All of the rooms look out towards the sea and it takes just thirty seconds to stroll from the comforts of your hammock to feeling the warm tropical ocean lapping at your feet. We had a slight preference for the last two bandas, which give a greater sense of privacy. Built from palm thatch and other natural materials, these constructions have a light, airy feel. All rooms are equipped with double or twin mattresses on the floor of the mezzanine sleeping area, accessed by a ladder. Beds can be made up as a double or two twins. There are self-contained bathrooms with hot and cold water shower, large living rooms equipped with handmade furniture and decorated with African art and colourful fabrics … and very comfortable hammocks.

RESTAURANTS & BAR

Last, but not least, enjoy the classic Zanzibari cuisine – a delicious blend of Arabian, Indian and African ingredients, specialising in seafood and tropical fruits and always offering vegetarian choices. Dinner is often taken outside under the clear and scintillating night skies, however, eating under the high cathedral roof of the visitors’ centre is also an experience not to be forgotten. Chumbe really is most special – it offers the warmest of welcomes, the most soothing of ambiences, yet the guest is helping to protect this ecologically important site.
