You will be greeted at your accommodation by one of the Big Expedition’s guides, who will provide you with a safety talk and a rundown of the days itinerary. You will then enjoy a panoramic morning drive to Lake Manyara National Park, stopping at Mto Wa Mbu village on the way. Lake Manyara National Park is a must to visit because it boasts a diverse and varied terrain in a relatively small area. The park stretches along the base of the 600 metre high Rift Valley escarpment. Lake Manyara covers two thirds of the park. Incredibly, the other one third of the park houses a variety of animals, which are supported by open savannah grassland with rocky outcrops, marshes and acacia woodland. Neighbouring Tarangire National Park it houses the largest concentration of African elephants but the park is known for it’s tree-climbing lions and a huge variety of bird species including flamingo and others. Other animals found here are buffaloes, zebras, hippos, leopards, and giraffes. Dinner and overnight stay is at Panorama Campsite.
After an early breakfast, we will depart through the rolling hills of the Ngorongoro Highlands to visit a traditional Maasai village. Here you will be greeted by the Chief who will guide you around the boma and explain the culture of the Maasai people. After saying goodbye to the Maasai people, we will continue on a game drive that will take you over the majestic plains of the Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti is Tanzania’s oldest and most popular park, also a world heritage site and proclaimed a 7th worldwide wonder. The park has earned it’s fame for its annual migration, when some 6 million hooves pound the open plains in search of fresh grazing. The Serengeti offers amongst the most scintillating game viewing in Africa. Expect to see great herds of buffalo, elephant, giraffe, topi, eland, hippo, leopard, zebra and much, much more. Enjoy a morning game drive in Serengeti, home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on earth. Expect to spot a large variety of wildlife includes cheetah, lion, giraffe, dik dik, impala, gazelle, buffalo and hippos. It is not uncommon to encounter the elusive leopards, playful lion cubs, friendly and inquisitive elephants and galloping herds of zebra. Stretching across the sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth your Safari in Serengeti would be extremely rewarding. After lunch we will enjoy a game drive en-route to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, stopping at Olduvai Gorge Archaeological Museum. This world famous archaeological site containing fossils of our early human ancestors, thought to be over 2 million years old. Dinner and overnight stay at Simba Campsite on the edge of Ngorongoro Crater.
Enjoy a stunningly picturesque drive as we descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a day of game viewing. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Forming a spectacular bowl of approximately 265 square kilometres, with sides up to 600 metres deep, it is home to approximately 30,000 animals at any one time. The Crater rim is over 2,200 metres high and experiences its own climate. From this high vantage point it is possible to see the tiny shapes of animals below making their way along the crater floor. Enjoy a stunningly picturesque drive as we descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a day of game viewing. Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Forming a spectacular bowl of approximately 265 square kilometres, with sides up to 600 metres deep, it is home to approximately 30,000 animals at any one time. The Crater rim is over 2,200 metres high and experiences its own climate. From this high vantage point it is possible to see the tiny shapes of animals below making their way along the crater floor. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago, this volcanic caledra is the home to a few black rhinos but healthy herds of leopards and cheetahs. Besides its uniqueness of housing the black maned lions and countless flamingos on soda waters of Lake Magadi, you would encounter plenty of other African wild beasts such as zebras, elands, gazelles and lions. Animals like leopard, elephant, mountain reedbuck, buffalo, hyena, jackals and cheetah can be spotted on the higher rim of the crater. After exploration you may think of gorilla trekking or lazing for a couple of days on the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar.
Tanzania is great to visit any time of year. Most people avoid the rainy months of April, May, and November. Some travelers like to go during the peak migration season of wildebeest, zebras and number of antelopes in Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Highlands and Masai Mara in Kenya. If by chance the itinerary shows that you will take your hot lunch at the hotel then there is no need of packed lunch. Basically lunch at the lodge follows with a rest before proceeding with late afternoon game drive.
The great extraordinary animal kingdom migration is an annual migration of about 1 million wildebeest, 300000 zebras and 200000 gazelles migrating from Serengeti National Park to Ngorongoro crater and contiguous Masai Mara National Reserve searching for fresh grasses as well as water. This is a honeymoon (easy to hunt) period for the crocodile in Grumeti River and other carnivores such as lion and leopard while the migration is taking place. The best time to see the migration in Tanzania is January-March and June-August and in Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya it is often best September-October. These are also the most popular times to go, so you will need to book well in advance.
